At long last, Steeler Training Camp has arrived, and I can barely contain myself. I might even splurge and drink two Diet Pepsis on Friday night to celebrate the arrival of players to Latrobe.

I figured we should commemorate the occasion with some hardcore Steeler talk, which is exactly what I attempted to do in today’s feature for 93.7 The Fan, 10 Steelers Under the Microscope in 2010.

These are the guys who will really be feeling the pressure to step up, for a variety of reasons.Their level of play and their health will be crucial to the team’s success this season.

• There’s something broken in Lane Kiffin’s head.  Something that doesn’t allow him to filter what he says before it comes out.  We all know people like that, but luckily most of them don’t have the ability to become national news.  Watching Kiffin is like seeing a train wreck in slow motion.  Can’t look away.

During Thursday’s Pac-10 media event, Kiffin just couldn’t resist.  When asked about the lawsuit filed by the Tennessee Titans against him, he said “I think it has to do with the location of the team.”  Yeah that’s exactly it Lane.  The only reason the Titans are coming after you is because of their proximity to the school you ditched after one season.  It has nothing to do with the fact that you hired away one of their coaches.  Nothing at all.

One day we’ll find out if Kiffin can really coach.  Until them we have to sit back and watch the train.

• David Tyree made one spectacular catch we’ll all remember forever.  Other than that, he caught a grand total of 55 passes in seven NFL seasons and is only 30 years old.  That second sentence is what makes him signing a one-day contract with the New York Giants so he can retire as a member of that franchise a joke.

I believe it’s marginally stupid when superstars do this.  I believe is over the top pointless when someone an average player does it.  There’s only one thing that could rival it.  The fact that Tyree will hold a conference call today to announce his retirement.

Apologies to Tyree who I’m sure is a stand-up individual, but signing with a team for one day simply so you can retire doesn’t make you a part of that team.  Not at all.  It makes the whole thing a show about you and only you.  Go out gracefully Tyree.  We want to remember your catch.  Not this.

• Have a player you think might have some maturity issues?  Hire his high school coach as an assistant to keep him in check.  That’s exactly what the Sacramento Kings have done.

Before and after DeMarcus Cousins was drafted, question marks were attached to the former Kentucky star.  Many wondered if he was mature enough to handle the NBA and truly become the superstar he was expected to be.  To help Cousins with his development and hopefully keep him on track, the Kings have hired Otis Hughley as an assistant.  Cousins played under Hughley at LeFlore in Mobile, AL.

• Chris Bosh claims he didn’t mail it in last season when playing for the Toronto Raptors.  In fact, he says: “On the back of my jersey it says ‘Bosh’…The Boshes are hard workers.  We have a lot of pride in what we do, in our jobs and in life.”  Damn right.

• The front page of ESPN.com’s college basketball page had the following on it this morning: “Purdue’s title hopes rest on Robbie Hummel’s health.”  Purdue?  Title worthy?  Really?  I really must not know as much about college basketball as I used to.

• If Ilya Kovalchuk really wants that 17-year deal, he might just get it.  There are rumors the KHL might be willing to match the deal he agreed to with the New Jersey Devils if Kovalchuk would consider switching leagues.  It would be a big blow to the NHL to lose one of its brightest stars in his prime.

• And finally, some baseball team acquired a big-name pitcher.

KEVIN COLBERT signed a five-year deal to remain as the Steelers’ Director of Football Operations, a job he’s held since 2000. The team is also close to signing second-round pick Jason Worilds, which would leave first-rounder Maurkice Pouncey as the only unsigned draft pick from the 2010 class. The last Steeler to sign a contract after camp started was Ben Roethlisberger in 2004. [PG]

ROSS OHLENDORF left Wednesday’s Pirate game in the first inning after being struck in the head with a Troy Tulowitzki line drive. It’s the second such incident this season for the team, with Chris Jaukubauskas getting hit in similar fashion against the Astros on April 24. Ohlendorf’s current condition is not yet available, but he did leave the field on his own power. Let’s hope all is well with Mr. Wonderful. He’s had a rough go of it in 2010. [By Gosh, It's Langosh]

RB JAMEEL POTEAT of Bishop McDevitt High, has made it official: he’s headed to Pitt. Poteat is the cousin of former Panther standout Hank Poteat and was mentored by another Bishop McDevitt back, Shady McCoy.  Poteat turned down scholarships from Florida, Notre Dame, Southern Cal, Cincinnati, Rutgers, and a number of other schools.  Wanny does it again! OF GORKYS HERNANDEZ will be out 3-4 months after fracturing his right ring finger, thus ending his season. One of the Pirates’ top prospects, Hernandez was playing at AA Altoona, where he was hitting .266 with 2 HR, 26 RBIs, 11 doubles and 17 SB in 20 attempts. [KDKA Insider]

JABAAL SHEARD’s preliminary hearing for his “throwing the man through the glass door” incident has been delayed until August 4. He remains on indefinite suspension from Team Wannstache. [Trib]

MARIO LEMIEUX and SIDNEY CROSBY became the first people to hit the Consol Energy Center ice, which they did on Tuesday afternoon. They were then joined by several children donning Crosby and Lemieux jerseys who got the chance to take some shots at 66, who stepped between the pipes. LONDON (Reuters) — Arsenal has no intention of selling captain Cesc Fabregas manager Arsene Wenger said on Wednesday dismissing Barcelona’s repeated approaches for the Spain midfielder as “transfer noise.”

Barca have openly courted the 23-year-old and according to media reports in Britain and Spain made a $45.17 million bid last month to take the World Cup winner back to the Nou Camp where he played as a youth.

After Spain was crowned world champions earlier this month, Fabregas’ celebrating team mates forced a Barcelona shirt over his shoulders on their return home but that looks to be as close as he will get to wearing one in the forseeable future.

“It is only noise. In our job we have to deal with what we can master. What we cannot influence is not to worry about,” Wenger told Arsenal’s website (www.arsenal.com).

“He is a very important player for us, he is our captain and we have worked very hard (for him) to be the future of our team and that is why we are always adamant about not letting him go.”

Fabregas has five years left on his contract and Arsenal have refused to open any negotiations with Barca over a sale.

He joined the Premier League club as a 16-year-old in 2003 and has made a total of 267 appearances scoring 48 goals.
